**Health Advisory for Beta Blocker and Diuretic Users During UK Heatwave**

## Alert for Users of Beta Blockers and Diuretics Due to Heatwave

As the UK faces a heatwave, people prescribed beta blockers or diuretics are urged to stay vigilant about their health. The Met Office has issued "Amber Extreme Heat Warnings" from Monday to Thursday, with temperatures soaring above 35C.

The British Heart Foundation reports that over 50 million prescriptions for beta blockers are written in the UK each year. Approximately two million people take these medications to manage high blood pressure and various circulatory issues.

High heat combined with humidity can pose significant risks for those with high blood pressure. "High temperatures and humidity can be a bad combination for anyone who suffers from high blood pressure, as the hot weather causes the heart to beat faster, circulating twice as much blood around the body," said Robert Bradshaw. He added that certain blood pressure medications might hinder the body’s ability to stay hydrated, complicating responses to high heat.

During this period, individuals are advised to monitor their blood pressure regularly. If readings are elevated or if they experience symptoms such as extreme fatigue, confusion, a rapid heartbeat, excessive sweating, headaches, swelling in limbs, or nausea, they should immediately seek urgent medical advice.
