Podcast and Music Use During Sleep: Experts Warn of Potential Hearing Risks

Many people enjoy listening to podcasts, soothing sounds, and music to fall asleep. However, this practice can pose certain risks to hearing health.
Experts warn that using earphones while sleeping may contribute to hearing loss. Sleepers are advised to be mindful of the volume level and duration they use their devices.
“A lot of people use earbuds to help them relax or block out noise,” noted audiologist Valerie Pavlovich Ruff, AuD. However, consistently listening at high volumes can damage hearing over time.
The Cleveland Clinic suggests that individuals should "skip noise-cancelling modes." These settings can mask important sounds from the environment. “Don't entirely tune out the world. Being able to hear your surroundings can be important for safety, especially in case of emergencies,” added the Clinic.
Awareness of the symptoms of hearing loss is important. Indicators may include difficulty hearing in noisy places and needing to increase the volume on devices. If these issues arise, it may be time to consult a healthcare professional.
