He now advocates for fewer but more effective sets, suggesting, “a lot less junk volume… would have led to a lot better results.”
As his career evolved into physical therapy, Cavaliere discovered the importance of corrective exercises. He said, “The real power of corrective exercises, especially when you do them consistently, is that they plug those leaks… that allow the bigger muscles… to actually do their job better.” Exercises like face pulls and external rotations not only enhance posture but also improve strength and efficiency, thereby decreasing injury risk.
Cavaliere also acknowledged early mistakes regarding nutrition. He once thought sugary instant oatmeal was a healthy choice for breakfast, only to realize its high sugar content later. He admits he became overly strict about his diet, believing every meal had to be flawless. He learned that a more flexible approach was crucial for long-term adherence. His training technique has also advanced; he encourages lifters to actively engage the muscles throughout each lift. He explained, “You should be seeking out a contraction discomfort… because it helps to build mind-muscle connection.”
Moreover, Cavaliere warns against training through pain. Instead, he recommends modifying exercises to work around injuries while ensuring safety. He explained that there is “a big difference” between training through an injury and training around one. This approach enables muscle growth while allowing injured areas to heal.
