Experts Recommend Lower Daily Step Goal for Health Benefits

Doctors have clarified the number of steps people should aim for each day. Contrary to the popular 10,000 steps guideline, experts now suggest a lower target can also lead to health benefits.
Dr. Daniel Bailey, a reader in sedentary behaviour and health at Brunel University of London, stated that this long-held belief has been "debunked." He explained that individuals do not need to reach 10,000 steps for optimal health.
Instead, Dr. Bailey noted that health improvements can be seen with smaller increments of physical activity. "The real-world implications are that people can get health benefits just from small increases in physical activity such as doing an extra 1,000 steps per day," he added.
This shift in understanding allows many to focus on manageable changes to their daily routines, realizing that even a slight increase in activity can significantly enhance overall health.
