Martin Lewis Warns Homeowners of Potential Council Tax Overpayments Ahead of Increases

# Martin Lewis Issues Urgent Council Tax Warning as Many Face Overpayments Ahead of Increases

Martin Lewis, a prominent financial advisor and consumer champion, has alerted homeowners to the risk of overpaying on council tax as a price hike approaches. According to Lewis, thousands of households could be affected, urging residents to reassess their council tax bands as the local councils prepare for upcoming adjustments.

Many individuals may not realize that they are paying more than necessary. Martin Lewis emphasizes the importance of reviewing your council tax band. "If you're able to challenge formally (also known as a 'proposal'), the Valuation Office Agency (VOA) must review your band. Although you don't have to officially provide evidence about nearby properties, we'd strongly suggest you don't skip that part," according to The Money Saving Expert website.

Residents are encouraged to submit requests for informal reviews of their council tax bands. However, the responsibility lies with them to present convincing evidence demonstrating that their current band is incorrect. "This means you can still submit a request for an 'informal review' of your Council Tax band... though the burden is on you to provide compelling evidence that your band is wrong," said the MSE.

In Scotland, the process is slightly different as the Scottish Assessors Association (SAA) handles council tax challenges. Unlike in England, there isn't an informal method to dispute your band, making it necessary to always follow the formal route known as making a proposal. "In Scotland, the Scottish Assessors Association (SAA) deals with Council Tax band challenges, known as 'proposals'," noted the MSE.

As council tax bands undergo reviews, residents are advised to act swiftly to avoid unnecessary financial strain. With imminent increases in council tax rates, staying informed and proactive could save homeowners significant amounts.
