Experts Recommend Chewing Gum and Home Changes to Improve Sleep During Allergy Season

Millions of households have been advised to chew gum before bedtime this April as a way to improve sleep quality during allergy season. Experts suggest that simple changes can significantly enhance the sleeping environment and help mitigate allergy-related disturbances.

Residents are encouraged to take proactive steps to “allergy proof” their homes. "To sleep better during allergy season, now is the time to begin to 'allergy proof' your home. A few simple changes like vacuuming more regularly and washing bedding at 60C can limit exposure to pollen and dust mites," explained Dr Mercer.

In addition to chewing gum, individuals can benefit from other effective measures. The expert advises, "You can also shower before bed to wash off pollen, stopping it from transferring to your pillow and try to keep windows closed even when it's warm, as open windows let pollen straight in." Such actions are crucial for maintaining a healthier sleep environment.

Another practical suggestion includes using silk pillowcases, which can help reduce allergen accumulation. "Silk pillowcases can help prevent allergens like dust mites from accumulating, as they are less likely to attract and hold onto allergens than cotton. Opting for silk bedding has been shown to have other benefits too, including hair protection and helping retain skin moisture," noted a GP.

As April approaches, implementing these strategies could provide substantial relief from allergy symptoms, leading to better sleep for many households.
