Veterinarian Issues Alert on Cold Weather Risks for Dogs

# Vet Shares Urgent Warning Signs Every Dog Owner Should Recognize in Snow

## Key Symptoms to Monitor for Dogs Exposed to Cold Conditions

A veterinarian has identified crucial warning signs that dog owners must be aware of when their pets have been outside in snowy weather. This guidance comes as winter conditions pose unique challenges for dogs, particularly when it comes to their safety and health.

Veterinarians emphasize the importance of vigilance in monitoring dogs during cold weather. Symptoms such as shivering, lethargy, or difficulty walking can indicate that a dog is struggling to cope with the extreme temperatures. If a dog is reluctant to go outside or seems disoriented, these may also be signs that they've been affected by the cold.

Jill, the veterinarian, underscored the necessity of paying close attention to a dog's body language in adverse conditions. "It's pretty simple, [you've] just got to pay attention to their body language. The size, the breed, the health, the wellness and the physical condition of your dog is what determines whether they can be out here and enjoy this or not."

Frostbite is another significant concern as it occurs when a dog's skin is exposed to very cold temperatures. According to the NHS, frostbite "happens when your skin freezes after being in very cold temperatures." In dogs, affected areas might become discolored, and in severe cases, tissue damage can occur.

Owners should take preventive measures by limiting the time their pets spend outdoors in frigid conditions. It’s advisable to provide a warm, comfortable space for dogs to rest after outdoor play. Recognizing the signs of distress and being proactive can ensure that dogs remain safe and healthy during winter weather.
