UK Tightens Food Import Ban Following Foot and Mouth Disease Outbreak in Cyprus

# UK Food Import Ban Update as Minister Issues Statement After New Outbreak Warning

Anyone entering the UK is reminded that they must not bring five specific food items into the country due to a travel ban. This warning was issued after a recent outbreak of Foot and Mouth disease was confirmed in Cyprus.

The UK Chief Veterinary Officer, Dr. Christine Middlemiss, alerted the public about the outbreak, stating, "Foot and Mouth disease has now been confirmed in Cyprus, we remain in contact with our European counterparts to understand the latest situation." This disease poses significant risks to animal health, prompting rigorous measures to protect UK livestock.

As a result of the ongoing threat, the import ban targets items that could potentially spread the disease. These items include certain meats, dairy products, and unprocessed agricultural goods, all of which are strictly prohibited to prevent bringing the disease into the UK.

Authorities are strictly enforcing these guidelines, and those caught attempting to smuggle these items can face hefty fines, which can reach up to £5,000. The government is committed to safeguarding the agricultural sector, and cooperation among countries is crucial in monitoring and addressing the risk of outbreaks.
