A prominent House Democrat, Maxine Waters, has sharply criticized the inclusion of cryptocurrency in 401(k) retirement plans. Her remarks come as she prepares for a potential leadership role in the crucial House Financial Services Committee. Waters expressed her concerns during a recent statement, highlighting the risks posed to everyday American investors.
Waters denounced the apparent contradiction between government approval of digital assets for retirement savings and the ongoing development of a protective framework by the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). “It is incoherent for the department to bless digital assets as suitable for the retirement savings of everyday Americans while the SEC is still building the investor-protection regime intended to make those same assets safe for ordinary investors,” she asserted. Her comments underline a growing unease about the regulatory landscape surrounding cryptocurrencies.
The congresswoman warned that risks are not limited to the wild fluctuations of individual digital tokens. “The hazard is not confined to the volatility of individual tokens, severe as that is,” Waters noted. She pointed out a broader decline across the digital asset ecosystem, marking a reduction in trading activity, developer engagement, and user participation.
Waters particularly criticized the lack of a federal regulatory framework for cryptocurrencies, which she believes has led to significant investor losses. She mentioned that the crypto market “operates outside any federal framework and has produced staggering investor losses.” This commentary signals her intent to prioritize investor protection and regulatory oversight as she steps into a more influential position within Congress.
