U.S. Army Green Beret Arrested for Alleged Insider Betting on Venezuelan Raid

# U.S. Army Green Beret Arrested Over $400,000 Betting on Venezuela Raid

## Allegations Point to Insider Trading Linked to Sensitive Military Operation

A Green Beret in the U.S. Army has been arrested for allegedly making over $400,000 in bets on a military raid in Venezuela, wherein he purportedly participated. This incident has raised significant concerns regarding the misuse of classified information. The bets were placed through Polymarket, a prediction market platform, which offers users the chance to wager on future event outcomes.

The arrest comes after the individual was found to have insider knowledge of a sensitive military operation, enabling him to wager on its timing and success. "The defendant allegedly violated the trust placed in him by the United States Government by using classified information about a sensitive military operation to place bets on the timing and outcome of that very operation, all to turn a profit,” stated Attorney Jay Clayton.

The military operation in question involved a raid against Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro's regime, where the Green Beret was directly involved in planning and execution. CFTC Chairman Mike Selig emphasized the gravity of the situation: "The defendant was entrusted with confidential information about U.S. operations and yet took action that endangered U.S. national security and put the lives of American service members in harm's way."

Polymarket officials noted their response to the situation. “When we identified a user trading on classified government information, we referred the matter to the DOJ [and] cooperated with their investigation,” the company stated. The case is considered a clear instance of insider trading, which is illegal under federal law, as Attorney Clayton highlighted: "That is clear insider trading and is illegal under federal law."

The implications of this arrest stretch beyond legal ramifications, raising questions about national security and the ethical obligations of military personnel.
