Three Morning Symptoms Linked to Increased Dementia Risk

# Three Morning Signs That May Indicate a Higher Risk of Dementia

Research has shown a link between certain morning symptoms and an increased risk of dementia. These signs can offer important clues to potential cognitive issues, especially concerning sleep disorders.

One warning sign is sleep disruption, which could lead to cognitive decline. Animals in studies showed results where lack of sleep alone caused only mild issues. However, researchers found that when sleep-disrupted breathing occurred, the effects were much more severe. "We found sleep deprivation alone in mice caused only mild cognitive impairment," said Study Author Professor Elizabeth Coulson. She added, "But we developed a novel way to induce sleep-disrupted breathing and found the mice displayed exacerbated pathological features of Alzheimer's disease."

Another indication is morning headaches, which may point to sleep apnea. This condition affects breathing during sleep and could lead to low oxygen levels in the brain. This lack of oxygen, or hypoxia, is linked to neuron death seen in dementia.

Lastly, excessive daytime sleepiness can signal sleep issues that may increase dementia risk. Some dementia clinicians have observed that patients’ memory improved after addressing their sleep disorders. "Some dementia clinicians have reported their patients' memory has improved after their sleep problems were identified and treated," they noted.

In summary, these early signs can provide valuable insights into an individual's risk of developing dementia. Those concerned about these symptoms are encouraged to contact their GP for further evaluation.
