Thousands of Pensioners Overcharged by HMRC Due to PAYE System Issues

Thousands of retirees have found themselves victims of overtaxation by HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC), with some being overcharged as much as £3,160 due to issues related to the Pay As You Earn (PAYE) system. This problem stems from the mismatch between the PAYE system, which is designed for regular earnings, and the irregular nature of pension withdrawals.
Many pensioners are experiencing significant tax overpayments that are typically rectified only after the fact. The current system fails to accommodate the flexible withdrawal options that modern pensions provide. It has led to confusion and financial strain for retirees who rely on these funds for their daily living expenses.
"This situation arises because PAYE was designed for predictable monthly earnings, not ad hoc pension withdrawals, and as a result it continues to generate avoidable overpayments that have to be corrected after the fact," said Mr Cole.
The ongoing taxation issues reveal that the system is playing catch-up rather than proactively solving problems. Mr Cole pointed out, “These figures show the system is still fixing errors rather than preventing them.” He further noted that the inclusion of flexible pension withdrawals exacerbates the issue, suggesting that "when flexible pension withdrawals are then layered on top, emergency tax becomes more likely and more costly."
Affected pensioners are urged to review their tax situations and check whether they are due any refunds from HMRC.
