## Dame Esther Rantzen’s Daughter Expresses Disappointment Over Failed Legislation

Dame Esther Rantzen's daughter, Rebecca Wilcox, has publicly voiced her frustration following the stalling of an assisted dying bill in Parliament. The proposal, which aimed to provide terminally ill individuals the option of assisted dying, ran out of time in the legislative process.

Rebecca shared her thoughts after the bill failed to advance, describing it as being "thwarted by such a petty few." She expressed hope that "the brilliant minds who are behind the bill will get it through again," acknowledging the effort that had gone into crafting the legislation. The final debate in the House of Lords marked a significant moment for advocates of assisted dying, but ultimately, the timing of the discussions meant it could not proceed.

Rebecca emphasized her mother’s strength and resilience in facing her terminal illness. "She defies expectations in every respect. She's three years post her diagnosis — and it was a diagnosis of 'terminal' from the first day. So she's bloody impressive," Rebecca stated. The ongoing health struggles faced by her mother prompted Rebecca to seek alternatives, including the Swiss assisted dying clinic Dignitas.

Despite her willingness to support her mother in this journey, Rebecca pointed out the legal dangers she would face. "I am still not allowed to go with her. And if I do, I will be investigated, I will lose my job, I will not be able to do my counselling work at Childline," she explained, highlighting the serious implications of the current law surrounding assisted dying in the UK.
