Newhaven's West Beach Set to Reopen After Nearly Two Decades of Closure

# Spectacular UK Beach Set to Reopen After Nearly 20 Years
## Community Hails Return of Newhaven's Only Sandy Beach
West Beach in Newhaven, which has been closed since 2008 due to health and safety concerns, is on track to reopen. This announcement comes after nearly two decades of local demand for access. The beach, the only sandy area of its kind in Newhaven, will once again welcome families and visitors.
Local MP, Peter MacCleary, emphasized the significance of this decision for the community. “West Beach belongs in the life of Newhaven. For 17 years, families have been locked out of our town's only sandy beach. Parents who played there as children have never been able to take their own children there – mine included. That is a real loss,” he stated. MacCleary also mentioned that the proposal is “now seeing genuine momentum,” highlighting the progress made toward reopening the beach.
The closure of the beach since 2008 has been a source of frustration for residents who have long sought its return. “Of course safety and harbour operations matter. But they cannot be used forever as a blanket excuse to keep people away from a much-loved public amenity. [The bill] sends a clear message: Newhaven deserves its beach back. The Government must now adopt this bill and make it law,” MacCleary added, reinforcing the urgent need for legislative support to facilitate the reopening.
With community backing, there is optimism that the long-awaited return of West Beach will enrich local life and leisure activities.
