NHS GP Raises Concerns Over Long-Term Use of Omeprazole for Acid Reflux Patients

# Concerns Raised About Long-Term Use of Omeprazole by NHS GP for Acid Reflux Patients
The NHS GP has highlighted significant worries regarding the long-term use of omeprazole, a common medication for acid reflux. They urged that ongoing use of proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) should be closely monitored due to potential health risks.
Patients using PPIs like omeprazole for extended periods without regular check-ups may face serious health complications. These risks include low magnesium and vitamin B12 levels and an increased chance of gut infections, specifically Clostridioides difficile, often referred to as C. diff.
The NHS GP stressed, "Essentially these medications aren't there to be used unnecessarily or for a long period of time. They do require us to review them. And that's because if used over a long period of time, they can slightly increase your risk of things like low magnesium, low vitamin B12, but also increase the risk of gut infections, particularly Clostridioides difficile."
Patients are advised to regularly consult their doctor for reviews while taking these medications. This caution aims to prevent possible complications associated with prolonged use of PPIs.
