Psychologist Highlights Afternoon Symptom of Dementia: Anxiety and Confusion Common in Caregiving Insights

# Little-Known Dementia Symptom Appears in the Afternoon
Around one million individuals are currently living with dementia in the UK. A psychologist has pointed out a lesser-known symptom that may manifest in the afternoon. This symptom can include heightened anxiety, agitation, and confusion.
The psychologist noted in a TikTok that, “This can happen at any time of day, but what we see a lot with people living with dementia is that it can happen in the afternoon." This indicates that family members and caregivers should pay attention to these changes, as they may signal increased distress for those affected.
The condition known as “sundowning” is particularly relevant here. As described by the care organization Elder, "Sundowning in dementia – sometimes called late-day confusion – describes a pattern of increased confusion, agitation or distress in the late afternoon and evening." This phenomenon is most often seen in individuals with mid-to-late stage Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia.
Awareness of these symptoms can be crucial for caregivers and families to provide appropriate support.
