Billions in Forgotten Bank Accounts May Remain Unclaimed Across the UK

# 'Potentially billions' unclaimed in forgotten bank accounts - method to finding yours

Millions might be sitting in neglected bank accounts across the UK that owners have lost track of. Finance expert Laura Pomfret revealed that “potentially billions of assets” remain unclaimed, highlighting a common issue faced by many individuals.

The problem is that lots of people have opened multiple accounts for various reasons and subsequently forgotten them. Pomfret noted, "[Losing track of an account] is actually super common. Lots of people have lots of bank accounts for lots of different reasons." This makes it essential for individuals to check for any forgotten funds that could be theirs.

If someone suspects they have a lost account, they should take specific steps to investigate. Pomfret advises, "Bring ID and a letter with your name and address on it and ask for their advice. You may not have the account number and sort code, but if you pass data protection checks, they are going to be able to say if you do or don’t hold an account." This straightforward approach ensures that individuals can ascertain their ownership of such accounts.

For those who prefer a less direct method, Pomfret highlighted an alternative: "You don't need to make a personal account on the website, you don't even have to provide an email address - but that might take a bit longer [to process] as they'll post information out to you." This flexibility allows people to seek information in a way that suits them best.
