NHS Highlights Importance of Vitamin D Supplements During Winter Months

# NHS Warns About Concerns Over Vitamin D Deficiency

The NHS has issued a warning about the importance of vitamin D during the winter months. The health service reminds everyone that from October to March, it is difficult to produce enough vitamin D from sunlight. This is crucial for maintaining healthy bones and muscles.

Experts recommend taking a daily supplement of 10 micrograms of vitamin D. These supplements can be easily found at most pharmacies and retail stores. "From October to March we can't make enough vitamin D from sunlight. To keep bones and muscles healthy, it's best to take a daily 10 microgram supplement of vitamin D. You can get vitamin D from most pharmacies and retailers," the health service stated.

While vitamin D is essential, it is also possible to take too much. Adults should limit their intake to under 100 micrograms a day and 50 micrograms for children. "I take 25 mcg (1,000 IU), which is within the limits of what's considered safe (anything under 100 mcg a day for adults or 50 mcg for children, according to the NHS) but closer to the sort of doses studies show you need to take to ward off infections, cancers, and maybe even dementia," an expert noted.

The NHS continues to advise people to ensure they are getting enough vitamin D, especially during those darker months when sunlight is scarce.
