Met Office issues rare 16-hour amber warning as UK set for snow barrage

The Met Office has issued an unusual 16-hour amber weather warning for parts of the UK as a severe snow barrage is anticipated. This warning is effective from early Thursday morning, signaling potential travel disruptions, power outages, and various disturbances across the affected regions, particularly in northern areas.

The warning specifically alerts to frequent wintry showers, especially feeding in from the North Sea. It is forecasted that these conditions will result in significant snow accumulations across the North York Moors and sections of the Yorkshire Wolds. By Thursday evening, accumulations could reach between 15 to 25 centimeters on higher ground above 100 meters, which presents a high likelihood of substantial disruption. The National Weather Agency noted, "Frequent wintry showers will feed inland from the North Sea, giving significant snow accumulations over the North York Moors and parts of the Yorkshire Wolds. By the end of Thursday, as much as 15-25 cm may have accumulated on hills above 100 m elevation, which is likely to cause substantial disruption."

Strong gusty winds may intensify the situation, potentially leading to blizzard-like conditions at times and possibly even lightning strikes alongside the snow showers. These additional hazards raise concerns regarding safety and public preparedness for the incoming weather. The Met Office’s amber warning underlines the need for residents in affected areas to be cautious and stay updated on weather developments.
