Men Arrested for Developing Smuggling Platform Similar to TripAdvisor

# Men Behind Large Migrant-Smuggling Operation Created 'TripAdvisor for Smugglers'

Two individuals, Dilshad Shamo, 43, and Ali Khdir, 42, have been arrested for their roles in facilitating the smuggling of migrants into Western Europe. They are linked to a significant criminal network, recently described by the National Crime Agency (NCA) as "a larger organised crime group."

Shamo and Khdir were reportedly involved in creating a platform that functioned similarly to TripAdvisor, but for smugglers. This platform provided essential information and services to those looking to illegally cross borders. The operation was built on intricate systems to navigate the dangerous journey into Europe.

The financial dynamics of their operation reveal that most of the funds generated did not end up in the hands of Shamo or Khdir. Instead, the money was processed in Iraq via the Hawala system, a traditional method of transferring funds. "Most of the money was never actually received by Shamo or Khdir it was all done in Iraq through the Hawala system. So, most of that money is still in Iraq or Kurdistan," said Mr Evains.

Authorities have stressed the importance of dismantling such networks to prevent the exploitation of vulnerable individuals attempting to enter Western Europe. The arrests mark a critical step in combating human trafficking and organized crime in the region.
