Martin Lewis, a prominent financial expert, has updated his advice regarding housing for young buyers aged 18 to 39. This guidance could lead to significant financial advantages, including potential savings of up to £4,000 annually for those aiming to purchase their first home.
The revelation comes amid discussions on improving the existing help-to-buy schemes, particularly the Lifetime ISA. Under this scheme, participants can receive a government bonus of 25% on savings aimed at buying their first home. This means that for every £4 contributed, the government adds £1, effectively boosting savings.
In addition to the Lifetime ISA, Lewis suggests that changes to the system, such as moving away from upfront bonuses, would simplify the process. "Moving away from an upfront bonus should make the system simpler. Paying the bonus only when someone buys their first home removes the need to claw money back through a withdrawal charge if the savings are used in a different way," explained Rachel Vahey, head of public policy at AJ Bell.
