Martin Lewis Announces New '63-Day Rule' for Council Tax Arrears Debt Management

Martin Lewis Announces New '63-Day Rule' for Council Tax Arrears Debt Management

# Law Reform Update: Martin Lewis Highlights New '63-Day Rule'

## Changes set to enhance consumer protections against council tax arrears.

Financial expert Martin Lewis has announced significant changes to the law regarding council tax enforcement. This development will implement a new “63-day rule,” which grants individuals a period of breathing space before further actions can be taken against them for unpaid debts. This update aims to alleviate the burden on those facing distress from aggressive debt collection tactics.

In his remarks, Lewis pointed out the staggering statistics on council tax collections, stating, “1.7 million bailiffs are sent to reclaim council tax each year. We've done on the show before that council tax is the most hideous, aggressive form of debt collection in the country.” The 63-day rule will apply when council tax difficulties arise, allowing individuals time to sort their debts before stricter collections commence.

Lewis emphasized the importance of this change, saying, “It is a big win. The law is changing, so you'll have 63 days breathing space before they can escalate it to a year, and there's some other changes going on too.” This modification reflects growing efforts to offer protection to vulnerable individuals, giving them necessary time to address their financial situations without the immediate threat of bailiffs.

As this law comes into effect, it is expected to reshape how council tax debts are managed and collected across the country, providing a vital safety net for those caught in financial difficulty.
