Labour Criticised for Inaction on Rising Illegal Traveller Encampments

**Labour 'Turning a Blind Eye' to Traveller Encampments and 'Letting Communities Down'**

Concerns have been raised regarding the Labour government’s handling of illegal Traveller encampments. Shadow Home Secretary Chris Philp has criticized the government for failing to effectively report on the presence of caravans, claiming this will negatively impact local communities and law enforcement efforts.

Philp pointed out that Labour's lack of action is leading to significant issues. "They are turning a blind eye," he stated, accusing the administration of concealing important information and ignoring the real challenges faced by local residents and police. He elaborated that the continuing problem of illegal encampments creates not only environmental hazards but also a rise in associated crimes.

Philp further emphasized the frustrations of residents, noting that illegal occupations often occur when travellers set up without permission and frequently resist evacuation. “All too often, travellers pitch up, illegally occupy a site and refuse to leave,” he said. As a result, local inhabitants voice their grievances to the police, but often to no avail. He highlighted that while law enforcement is eager to respond, they are hindered by legal limitations established by court rulings deemed incompatible with the European Convention on Human Rights.

He remarked on the deteriorating situation, stating, "It's no surprise that on Labour's watch, things are getting worse… Labour have let the problem get out of control, so they're trying to hide the facts, hoping nobody notices." This ongoing predicament raises significant questions about community safety and the government's efficacy in managing illegal encampments.
