A journalist recently shared their experience visiting Venice for the first time, detailing a costly error they nearly made during their trip. While enjoying the picturesque views of the city, they inadvertently broke local regulations regarding eating in public places, which could have led to an expensive fine.
While in Venice, the journalist decided to indulge in gelato. As they prepared to take their first bite while seated on a shaded step, local authorities approached with gestures signaling them to get up. The journalist realized they were violating an etiquette rule that could incur a fine ranging between 100 and 200 euros. "As I was about to take my first bite, the nearby authorities waved their hands up and down at me - a gesture I could only take to mean 'get up'. And there I was, committing an etiquette violation that, according to the City of Venice, may result in a fine of 100 to 200 euros," they recounted.
Venice has strict regulations enforced by the City Council Municipal Police to maintain cleanliness and safety. These regulations state: “Do not consume food and drink sitting on the ground, do not sit or lie down on banks and foundations, monuments, bridges, steps, puteals and high-water walkways,” according to officials. Such violations not only impact the city's aesthetics but also aim to protect public hygiene. Penalties for violating these rules can range from €25 to €500, causing considerable financial implications for careless tourists.
After realizing their error, the journalist opted to cut their losses and joined the queue for gelato, choosing to enjoy it while standing instead. "I eventually cut my losses and stood in line for gelato before sitting on a shaded step to enjoy it," they concluded.
