# Victim of Celebrity Scams Loses £250,000 and Becomes Homeless

## Jennifer Barton sold her home and gave money to fraudsters posing as celebrities

Jennifer Barton, a victim of elaborate online scams, found herself homeless after losing £250,000 to fake celebrity romances on platforms like Facebook and Instagram. She became involved with individuals claiming to be famous, who preyed on her emotions and led her to believe in their fabricated stories.

Months of persuasion saw Barton selling her house to fund these scammers, who concocted numerous sob tales to extract money from her. "Some said they were going through divorce and didn't have their own money. It was one excuse after another," she recounted. These imposters left her emotionally drained and financially devastated.

Barton was encouraged to move her conversations to Telegram, where the exchanges began innocently enough but soon took a suspicious turn. "She advised me to go on Telegram, so I downloaded it. At the start, it was general everyday kind of chat with a bit of flirtatiousness," she explained. However, the intimacy quickly escalated into requests for money.

Despite her suspicions, she found herself still believing the lies she was told. “I was seeing his pictures on Instagram with his wife and I questioned him and he told me to not believe 'everything you read on social media'. I felt like such a fool,” Barton admitted. This betrayal not only stripped her of her savings but also left her without a home to call her own.
