HMRC Warns High-Earning Parents of Child Benefit Repayment Risks

HMRC Warns High-Earning Parents of Child Benefit Repayment Risks

# HMRC Issues Urgent Warning for High Earners

## Alert Targets Parents With Household Income Over £60,000

HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) has issued a crucial warning aimed specifically at parents who earn more than £60,000 annually. This notification focuses on the impact of household earnings on certain benefits and tax credits available to families.

Parents receiving Child Benefit should be particularly aware of the implications resulting from their income levels. The warning highlights that families with an income exceeding the specified amount may need to repay some or all of the Child Benefit received, due to the High Income Child Benefit Charge (HICBC).

The charge applies when a taxpayer's income surpasses £60,000, leading to a gradual repayment that reduces benefits accordingly. For every £100 earned over this threshold, the benefit reduces by 1%. Therefore, this could result in a complete reduction of benefits for those earning £100,000 or more.

Officials have advised families to review their income situation to prepare for the potential consequences on their Child Benefit claims. Parents are encouraged to calculate their total income and consider the forthcoming changes to ensure compliance with tax regulations.

“Families should assess their financial situation to avoid unexpected repayments,” said an HMRC representative.
