Liz Reid, Vice President and Head of Search at Google, emphasized the magnitude of the upgrade, calling it “the biggest upgrade to our iconic search box since its debut over 25 years ago” during a press briefing.

The redesign was part of a broader array of announcements, including new Gemini models and the launch of an AI personal assistant named Spark. However, the revamped search interface is likely to have the greatest impact, signaling a shift in Google's approach towards a conversational interface for users to engage with AI, rather than shoving in fragmented keywords.

The new search box expands to accommodate lengthier, conversational queries. Previously encouraging brief terms, the redesign invites users to express more complex questions in detail. Additionally, it now supports various forms of submissions right from the main interface, including images and videos, eliminating extra navigation steps which were necessary before.

To further enhance user experience, Google has introduced an AI query suggestion system that goes beyond mere autocomplete. This system assists users in crafting intricate, nuanced questions, effectively “coaching” them towards inquiries that work best with AI capabilities.

The rollout of this innovative search box has already commenced in all countries and languages where AI Mode is operational.

A significant aspect of this update is the unification of AI Overviews with AI Mode, providing users with a streamlined experience. Starting Tuesday, this merged setup allows users to ask questions, receive AI-generated summaries alongside traditional results, and engage in a back-and-forth conversation with AI—all from the primary search interface.

Reid clarified that this modernization is designed to make the search experience intuitive. “For most users, they don't actually want to have to think about… a traditional page or an AI-forward search experience,” she said.

Google’s strategic revamp was driven by impressive statistics indicating that user behavior is evolving rapidly. AI Mode, first launched in the U.S. in 2025, has exceeded one billion monthly users in its inaugural year, with queries doubling each quarter. The company also noted that AI Overviews now reach over 2.5 billion users monthly.

Sundar Pichai, Google's CEO, emphasized that these numbers demonstrate AI features are not just supplementary but are enhancing overall search usage. He remarked that the conversational aspect of search is reshaping user interaction, bringing deeper insights.

The new interface operates on Google’s latest AI model, Gemini 3.5 Flash, which offers superior performance, running four times faster than previous models. Pichai described it as unmatched in terms of intelligence and speed, crucial for sustaining a conversational AI search experience that meets users’ expectations for speed and responsiveness.

This upgraded search capability includes "generative UI," allowing Google to produce custom widgets and interactive visuals tailored to user queries in real-time. Reid illustrated this by suggesting that users asking about black holes could receive an interactive visual explanation immediately.

Additionally, for ongoing tasks—such as planning events—users will have the opportunity to create customized experiences powered by Google’s Antigravity development platform, simply by articulating their needs in natural language.

New “information agents” will also make their debut, permitting users to automate web monitoring tailored to their needs, like tracking financial market changes or apartment listings. These agents will first be available to Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers during the summer.

The redesign signifies a major shift not only for users but also for the ecosystem of publishers and advertisers. As search queries evolve from keywords to complete sentences, conventional SEO practices may need substantial adjustment. The prioritization of content that offers in-depth answers will likely heighten in importance.
