**Give Me 6 Minutes: Strength Side Shares 5 Simple Habits to Get Lean Without Counting Calories**

Joshua Hash from Strength Side believes you can get lean without excessive cardio, strict diets, or counting every calorie. In a recent YouTube video, he shares five sustainable habits that have helped him maintain a lean physique as he approaches 40 while building a stronger, athletic body.

Hash emphasises simple and manageable practices instead of drastic fat-loss methods. He highlights the importance of walking as an undervalued tool for fat loss. Instead of depending solely on intense cardio, he suggests increasing daily movement through walking. He describes a friend who became lean by walking 20,000 steps a day while using a standing desk.

“Work hard to build muscle, work slow and steady to burn fat,” Hash said. He acknowledges that 20,000 steps might not be practical for everyone, but believes that achieving around 10,000 steps daily can lead to noticeable improvements. To stay active, he moves between strength sets to accumulate additional steps during workouts.

Hash also advocates for using a jump rope as an efficient conditioning technique. He points out that this exercise enhances coordination, builds leg strength, and boosts cardiovascular fitness while being easier on the joints when performed accurately. “I rarely go over 10 minutes,” he mentioned, explaining that he prefers a routine of one minute of jumping followed by one minute of rest for a total of 10 minutes every other day.

Another effective method he recommends is adding resistance to walks. Hash suggests using sled drags, loaded carries, or simply carrying a kettlebell or dumbbell while walking. These actions challenge the legs, core, posture, and grip while increasing the heart rate without heavily stressing the spine. He credits sled dragging, introduced by Ben Patrick (known as the Knees Over Toes Guy), as a safe way to enhance lower-body strength and conditioning.

Rather than resorting to strict diets, Hash proposes a habit-based approach he calls the “Cut One” rule. “I use a technique called cut one,” he explained. Instead of changing an entire diet at once, he advises removing just one food that leads to overeating frequently, such as chips or sugary drinks. Swapping that food for a healthier option makes it easier to stick to long-term.

The last of Hash's suggestions focuses on high-repetition bodyweight exercises. He finds that moves like push-ups, pull-ups, dips, squats, and hanging leg raises help build muscle and improve conditioning. He often employs simple workouts, like performing 20 bodyweight squats at the start of every minute for five minutes.

“We think we need long gym sessions and tons of cardio,” Hash stated. “But I’m always amazed with how much you can change with five minutes of push-ups, five minutes of squats a day.”

Hash advises viewers against trying every method all at once. Instead, he encourages selecting one or two habits to practice consistently. Whether it's walking more, using a jump rope, simplifying a nutritional habit, or incorporating daily calisthenics, his core message is that sustainable routines yield better results than short-term extremes when it comes to staying lean for life.
