Apple and Google Criticised for Excluding Northern Ireland Flag Emoji

Apple and Google Criticised for Excluding Northern Ireland Flag Emoji

# Outrage as Apple and Google Overlook UK Flag – ‘Embarrassing’

## Many Brits Left Without a Flag Option on Their Devices

In a significant oversight, British citizens are finding themselves without a flag emoji to represent Northern Ireland on their smartphones. This situation has drawn the ire of many, who believe that all parts of the UK deserve equal recognition in digital platforms.

The issue has gained momentum lately, with calls for the Ulster Banner emoji to be included alongside those for England, Wales, and Scotland. Reform UK MP Robert Jenrick expressed his discontent, stating, "This is an embarrassing oversight that should be corrected immediately. Brits in Northern Ireland deserve to have their distinct identity recognised in the same way as the English, Welsh and Scots."

Many users have echoed these sentiments. One customer pointed out that "Northern Ireland has 1 flag, also known as the Ulster Banner. It's may not be official but it is recognised by both sides of the community. Even the celebrities recognise it, ie Rory McIlroy."

This ongoing issue has prompted thoughts on how a flag emoji could be implemented. One user speculated that if the Stormont assembly could come to a consensus on a flag, it might finally be included in standard emoji sets. With the assembly now operational after a three-year hiatus, the possibility may not be far off.
