Recognizing Early Symptoms of Measles Amidst Increasing School Outbreaks

# Five Early Symptoms of Measles to Watch for as School Outbreak Grows

As measles outbreaks spread in schools, it is important to recognise early symptoms. While many think of a rash as the main sign, other symptoms often appear first.

Measles usually starts with these early indicators:

- High fever that can reach 40°C.

- Cough, which may become more severe.

- Runny or stuffy nose, leading to difficulty breathing.

- Red, watery eyes, known as conjunctivitis.

- Sore throat, which can be quite uncomfortable.

Officials stress that understanding these symptoms is key as cases rise. "Uptake of the routine childhood vaccinations is the lowest it has been in a decade and is well below the 95 per cent uptake needed to protect the population and prevent measles outbreaks. This is giving measles a chance to get a foothold in our communities," said the UK Health Security Agency in January.

Parents are urged to keep an eye on their children for these signs. Effective vaccination can prevent the disease and protect the wider community.
