DWP Encourages Citizens to Check State Pension Claims for £8,300 Owed

### DWP Urges Citizens to Verify State Pension Claims as Many Overlook £8,300 Owed

The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) is calling on individuals to review their state pension claims after discovering that "very few people" have claimed an average of £8,300 they are owed. DWP permanent secretary Peter Schofield raised concerns during a recent appearance before a parliamentary committee about the alarming underreporting of claims among eligible citizens.

In his address, Schofield revealed that there are ongoing issues regarding awareness of entitlements. The DWP has previously stated that there are numerous individuals who have yet to receive "the money that they are entitled to." This significant matter has prompted the department to encourage pensioners to check their claims proactively.

The situation is compounded by misinformation. The top official mentioned that many potential claimants initially doubted official correspondence regarding their state pensions. According to him, even after the HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) attempted to reassure the public, some remained skeptical. "That suggested that unfortunately some people did not believe the letter, so HMRC did a load of work to reassure people about the letter. It put things on its website to say, 'If you get a letter like this, this is not a scam', but people did not necessarily believe it," said Schofield.

Additionally, some individuals might have chosen not to pursue their claims due to the time that has passed. "Other people just said, 'This is such a long time ago. I do not really want to come forward to claim the money that I am entitled to'," he noted. The department is now advocating for greater awareness and action from citizens to ensure they do not miss out on vital funds.
