DWP Launches Review to Address Debts for 25,000 Carer's Allowance Claimants

# DWP to Cut or Cancel Debts of 25,000 Carer's Allowance Claimants

The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) has announced a mass review of Carer's Allowance cases, affecting approximately 25,000 claimants. This significant move comes amid growing concerns over unpaid debts that many caregivers have accrued under a system that has been widely criticized for its harshness.

The review aims to address longstanding issues that have left caregivers feeling like "treated as criminals, with resulting feelings of fear and shame," as highlighted in an independent report by former charity lead Liz Sayce last November. Many of those affected have faced severe financial strain and emotional distress as a result of the framework that has penalized them "for no fault of their own," according to Kirsty McHugh, chief executive of Carers Trust.

Work and Pensions Secretary Pat McFadden emphasized the urgency of the issue, stating, "We inherited a system that left unpaid carers building up debt through no fault of their own, something we're determined to put right. Carers are vital to our communities, and we are committed to taking action to rebuild their trust."

This review follows calls from advocates and unions demanding reforms to better support caregivers who provide essential care yet suffer financially due to complications within the welfare system. The DWP's action is expected to bring relief to thousands, aligning with the government's goal of better supporting those who play a crucial role in the nation’s welfare.
