DfT Clarifies Drivers' Responsibilities Regarding Animal Accidents on UK Roads

# Update from the DfT on Laws Requiring Drivers to Stop and Report Incidents

Motorists in the UK must adhere to specific responsibilities when encountering certain accidents while driving. This includes obligations to stop and report incidents that involve animals, particularly pets such as cats.

The Department for Transport (DfT) clarified that, while there is currently no legal requirement for drivers to report collisions involving cats, it is advised that they take compassionate actions where possible. "The Government has no current plans to mandate that motorists report a collision involving a cat, or to grant police powers to prosecute motorists who fail to report a collision involving a cat," stated the DfT.

While not mandated, the DfT encourages drivers to make an effort to ascertain the owner of any domestic animals involved and inform them about the situation whenever feasible. "This is a compassionate country and although there is no obligation to report all animal deaths on roads, drivers should, if possible, make enquiries to ascertain the owner of domestic animals, such as cats, and advise them of the situation," according to the department.

The guidance emphasizes the importance of responsible driving and public awareness surrounding animal welfare on the roads.
