David Lammy Faces Parliamentary Scrutiny Over Early Prison Release Policy

David Lammy Faces Parliamentary Scrutiny Over Early Prison Release Policy

## David Lammy Challenged Over Early Prison Releases During PMQs

### Shadow Foreign Secretary Faces Criticism in Parliament

During the latest Prime Minister's Questions (PMQs) session, David Lammy, the Shadow Foreign Secretary, faced fierce scrutiny over the government's controversial policy of early prison releases. This exchange occurred in Parliament, where passions ran high as MPs expressed their outrage over the implications of releasing criminals prematurely.

James Cleverly, the Shadow Local Government Secretary, highlighted the gravity of the situation, questioning Lammy's position on the release of "5,000 serious criminals including rapists, including paedophiles." He demanded, "Will he apologise to the victims of the rapists, sexual predators and paedophiles that he is planning to release early?" This pointed inquiry underscored the tension surrounding the issue of public safety and justice for victims.

Cleverly went further, referencing the staggering statistic of "50,000 prisoners released early in just two years on his watch." He expressed his disbelief that Lammy would not take the opportunity to apologize, stating, "I am genuinely shocked that when given the opportunity to apologise to victims, he very publicly refused to do so."

Despite mounting pressure, Lammy maintained that, "Every decision we have taken has been on the basis of public safety and justice for victims." However, his defense failed to quell the criticism from the Conservative benches, with one MP predicting that Lammy would "look back on this exchange and I think he will be shocked by how this is coming across."

The heated debate over early releases raises concerns about the impact on victims and public safety, keeping the issue at the forefront of political discourse.
