Coroner Calls for Improved Safety Information on Apixaban After Death from Minor Fall

Coroner Calls for Improved Safety Information on Apixaban After Death from Minor Fall

# Coroner's Urgent Warning on Apixaban After 'Healthy' Man Dies from Minor Fall

A coroner has issued a strong warning about the blood thinner apixaban following the death of a seemingly healthy man after a minor fall. The man, who was not named, suffered a fatal head injury and raised concerns regarding the information provided to patients about the risks associated with such medications.

The incident highlights significant gaps in the information given to those prescribed apixaban. Rachel Hyman, the coroner, noted that many patient information leaflets do not mention what steps a patient should take if they experience a head injury. She stated, "None of the patient information leaflets that I reviewed expressly addressed the steps to be taken by a patient if they sustain trauma to the head. In my opinion there is a risk that future deaths could occur unless action is taken."

Hyman also mentioned that this was not an isolated case. "Clive was not the only person to have died from it. The coroner said she has seen this problem in her court before. It is probably happening to people right now who were not made aware of this."

In light of these issues, there are increased calls for clearer warnings and guidelines surrounding the use of apixaban and similar blood thinners to prevent further tragedies.
