Norovirus Cases Rise in the UK: Key Signs and Prevention Tips

# Contagious vomiting virus increasing in the UK – signs of infection

The UK is currently experiencing a rise in norovirus cases, which causes vomiting and diarrhea. This highly contagious virus can spread quickly and often leads to outbreaks. Public health officials are warning people to be vigilant about cleanliness and hygiene to help control its spread.

Norovirus spreads more easily than most people realize. "It only takes a tiny amount of the virus to make you sick, and it can survive on surfaces for days," said Jason Murphy, Head of Pharmacy at Chemist4U. With an increase in cases, it is vital to go beyond basic hygiene measures to keep yourself and others safe.

To minimize risk, the public is encouraged to choose disinfectants labeled as "virucidal" or effective against non-enveloped viruses. "If it doesn't say this, it's unlikely to work against norovirus," Jason explained.

Health experts also suggest limiting contact for those who are ill. "If you can, have one bathroom, one towel set, and one bin for whoever is unwell," Jason advised. This mirrors infection control practices in hospitals and helps reduce the virus's spread.

Dehydration is the main health concern associated with norovirus. "Electrolytes are better than plain water because they replace the salts in your body as well as fluid," Jason noted.

If you suspect you have norovirus, it's important to stay hydrated and contact your GP, NHS 111, or emergency services if needed.
