Cold Weather Warning Issued for Elderly in Nine English Regions

# Cold Snap to Hit 9 Areas in England as Weather Warning Issued to Over 65s - Full List
As temperatures are set to decline significantly, a severe weather warning has been issued for the elderly in nine areas of England. This warning comes as the country prepares for a colder start to the new year.
Met Office forecaster Dan Stroud indicated that the country will move away from stable cool conditions to more variable weather with potential wintry hazards, especially in northern regions. “We're losing this sort of settled but chilly conditions, and bringing in something a little bit more showery with more wintry hazards in the forecast, particularly for the north of the country,” Stroud stated.
The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) has expressed concern regarding the impact of this cold weather on overall health, particularly among older adults. They highlighted that colder indoor temperatures in places like hospitals and care homes could fall below recommended levels. “Temperatures inside places like hospitals and care homes dropping below the levels recommended for assessing health risks,” the UKHSA noted.
This weather change could potentially lead to an increase in health service demand and a subsequent “rise in deaths,” especially among those in vulnerable groups. The UKHSA also emphasized challenges in maintaining indoor temperatures at the recommended 18 degrees Celsius, which could further jeopardize the well-being of susceptible individuals. “Challenges keeping indoor temperatures at the recommended 18C leading to more risk to vulnerable people,” the agency warned.
