## Mayor of Venice Proposes Visitor Fee Increase
Visitors to Venice, a popular European destination for UK tourists, may soon incur a hefty fee. The Mayor of Venice, Luigi Brugnaro, has proposed a significant increase in the visitor tax, potentially rising to €50. This comes as part of an initiative aimed at managing tourist numbers and preserving the city's heritage.
This proposed charge suggests a jump from the current fee range of €5 to €10, which the mayor believes is insufficient. "If today it ranges from €5 to €10, my proposal is to increase it to €30 to €50," he stated while speaking to Corriere della Sera.
Brugnaro also highlighted that the existing low fees do not influence tourist spending behavior. "I predicted that €5 wouldn't have any effect. I mean, €5 isn't enough to get me to choose one dinner entree over another at a restaurant; I've paid that much for a cappuccino or a bottle of water at a concert," he noted in a YouTube video.
The city has been grappling with issues related to overcrowding, and this proposed fee is one possible solution to ensure that Venice can manage its tourist influx while maintaining its unique atmosphere and charm.
