Angela Rayner Launches New Fair Work Agency with Arrest Powers

# Angela Rayner's Agency for Workers Empowered to Arrest

Former Deputy Prime Minister Angela Rayner introduced a new workers' agency during the 2023 Labour Party conference, which has been labeled as a "jobs police." This agency is set to be endowed with extensive powers, including the authority to arrest individuals.

The Fair Work Agency is designed to combat exploitation in the workplace by enforcing workers' rights. Rayner stated, “We will end the race to the bottom by creating a single enforcement body with the teeth to ensure that rights are not just words on a page, but a reality for every worker.” The agency aims to create a robust framework for workers, moving beyond mere rhetoric to tangible protections.

The agency is positioned to make a significant impact as it already possesses broader powers than its predecessors. "The Fair Work Agency already possesses significantly broader authority than its predecessors, including the ability to enter premises," noted Hall-Chen from the Institute of Directors. This capability reflects a shift towards a more aggressive approach to upholding labor rights, demonstrating the Labour Party’s commitment to its agenda in the lead-up to the next general election.
