Andy Burnham Faces Criticism Over £4.7 Billion Defence Challenge

# Andy Burnham 'Out of His Depth' as He Inherits Staggering £4.7bn Defence Bill

## With existing capabilities under threat, political figures question Burnham's preparedness for the challenge.

Andy Burnham is facing significant scrutiny regarding his handling of a crippling £4.7 billion defence bill. The Manchester Mayor's lack of experience in international matters has raised alarm among military and political figures, particularly as the UK navigates increasingly complex security considerations.

Existing military assets, such as Chinook helicopters, are being removed from service to fund new capabilities. This situation reflects broader issues within the defence sector, leaving the nation vulnerable as it manages pressing threats, including cyberattacks and challenges related to undersea cables.

“Mr Burnham has no international experience, and no defence, foreign policy, or national security background. We have to work with that,” stated British Army officer Mr Ellwood, highlighting the gaps in Burnham's qualifications for such a critical role. Observers remain concerned that the current approach is inadequate to address the evolving landscape of warfare.

“Ultimately, you will probably have to increase income tax by 1% or 1.5%, which is about the price of a cup of coffee per person per day,” warned Mr Ellwood. He added, “You are going to have to spend more money, and that probably means raising taxes. There is no other way of doing it. Absolutely, there is money to be found in the welfare budget.”

With pressure mounting for decisive action, the need for a strategic response to the current defence challenges has never been more urgent.
