AA Advises Against Cold Water for Safe and Effective Windscreen De-Icing

AA Advises Against Cold Water for Safe and Effective Windscreen De-Icing

# AA-Approved De-Ice Method Clears Frost from Windscreens 'Fast'

The Automobile Association (AA) has outlined an effective method for drivers to quickly defrost their windscreens, ensuring safety and preventing damage. This guidance comes as a warning to motorists who may inadvertently harm their vehicles with poor defrosting practices during the colder months.

One of the key concerns raised by the AA is the use of cold water for defrosting. "We wouldn't recommend using cold water as it can freeze on the windscreen and cause damage," the AA also advised. Instead, they promote using proper de-icing techniques that prevent additional issues, such as the potential for ice to refreeze, which could lead to wipers or even door handles sticking.

Drivers often neglect to fully clear the ice from their vehicles before hitting the road, leaving only a small section visible, a practice known as "portholing." "Not everyone bothers to clear all the ice off before they drive off, instead leaving just enough of a window to see through. This is known as 'portholing' and could get you in trouble with the police if you're caught driving dangerously," the AA stated.

Utilizing the correct de-icing method not only enhances visibility but also safeguards against the risk of encountering run-ins with law enforcement over unsafe driving practices. The AA's recommendations serve as essential advice for all drivers facing the winter weather.
